Why can’t I get rid of my psoriasis?

In order to promote healing and clear psoriasis one must take a multi-pronged approach. With steadfast commitment to life changes over an extended period you can get rid of many types of psoriasis, and prevent their recurrence.

Alcohol, dairy, spicy foods, stress, and certain medications contribute to cause and persistence of psoriasis.

Remember: Psoriasis is exacerbated by use of alcohol, lithium, anti-malarial medications, and other liver toxins. Treating the whole body/mind system is paramount to achieve lasting recovery from psoriasis.

I use acupuncture, nutritional counsel, (with particular focus on pH), topical herbal washes, mindfulness coaching, and massage as a whole self healing response to psoriasis.

Heavy periods, headaches, fatigue, severe mood swings - is this menopause?

If you are still menstruating then these symptoms are more indicative of peri-menopause.

Peri-menopause can occur up to five years before cessation of menses and menopause. For some women this time of transition can be the hardest.

Remember:  Diet, exercise, mindfulness practice, along with acupuncture, massage, and herbal support are all important to helping make the transition into menopause easier.

I have seen a significant decrease of hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and insomnia in menopause with women who began regular treatments, and made life changes during the perimenopause years.

My low back pain, and muscle spasms won’t quit. What should I do?

Low back pain can be related to the large muscle that connects the hip to the lower rib and spine called the quadratus lumborum. When in spasm you may have constant deep aching pain even at rest.

Excessive sitting, heavy lifting, leg length differences, and twisting while lifting are a few possible contributors to QL spasm and pain.

Remember: Muscle spasm and contraction exist to protect and support an injured area. If it continues for too long it will cause reduced blood flow to muscle tissue and cause more damage. End the cycle of pain and contraction by learning to release muscle tension.

I use massage, acupuncture and teach patients how to break the cycle of pain and spasm through breath, mindfulness, and gentle movement.

What can I do to prevent Osteoporosis?

Avoid: carbonated drinks, caffeine, excessive weight loss/dieting, and prescription drugs in the Bisphosphonate group, and steroid inhalants. Exercise, eat well, and improve strength and balance.

Remember: Balance, and muscle strength are important ways to prevent falls, and bone fractures.

I use herbal supplements, nutritional counseling, and Qi Gong exercises to increase balance, and help prevent osteoporosis.

My anxiety is ruining my life. Do I need to take medication?

Not always. Anxiety can keep you from living a full life, but you don’t necessarily need medication to get your life back.

A mindfulness based practice combined with acupuncture and herbs can help you change your relationship to anxiety.

Remember:  Don’t believe everything you think. Begin to question the thoughts that cause your anxiety. Learn how your emotional reaction to physical symptoms increases anxiety.

I will teach you mindfulness based strategies to help you manage your anxiety. Acupuncture, massage and herbal therapies will help alleviate the physical symptoms of anxiety.

My knees hurt first thing in the morning and when walking. Is this arthritis?

Not necessarily. Tight muscles may be causing your pain.

Ten minutes of gentle stretching a day can alleviate much of your knee pain.  Focus on your quads, hamstrings, and roll out that IT band.

Remember: If you hike, bike, walk extensively or dance, your muscles tighten and pull causing imbalance and injury.

I use deep tissue massage, and specific acupuncture knee points to resolve knee pain.

My hot flashes are keeping me up at night. Do alcohol and diet make them worse?

Yes. Hot flashes are related to what you eat and drink.

Alcohol, refined sugars,  some flour based carbs, caffeine, and spicy foods may increase hot flashes.

Remember: Bedding also matters. Leave your feet uncovered, and use a light down comforter that can easily be thrown off. Fewer to no clothes at night will help keep hot flashes, and night sweats down.

I use Chinese herbal formulas for stubborn hot flashes that don’t resolve with the above suggestions.

My heels feel bruised and hurt when I start moving in the morning. Is this Plantar Fasciitis?

Yes. It’s quite possible your foot and heel pain is Plantar Fasciitis, especially if the pain is worse in the morning, and with long walks.

Daily stretching, and exercises will help prevent and alleviate Plantar Fasciitis.

Remember: New footwear, an increase or change of intensity, and duration in your athletic routine may trigger Plantar Fasciitis.

I use trigger points, and deep tissue massage to alleviate Plantar Fasciitis.
